As I mentioned in a previous post, one of my goals this year is to hone in on my personal style to develop a more authentic wardrobe. Since another one of my goals is to be more sustainably-minded, I wanted to approach my style overhaul in a thoughtful, purposeful way as opposed to just buying a bunch of new clothes like I would have done in the past.
So, I decided this time to use a guide to help me through the process. After hearing about The Curated Closet from multiple sources, it felt like a good resource for me. I only ordered the workbook, but if you want to hear more about the author’s experience, you can always check out the original as well.
My initial reaction to the workbook is that it looks like a LOT more work than I was anticipating. At first I was a bit disappointed in this because I’m ready for my new wardrobe to be here NOW, but I think the extra steps will be well worth the effort and necessary for me to get the results I want. And while I’m on this journey, why not share my progress here to keep myself accountable?
The initial prep work is to document your outfits every day for two weeks, as well as what you’re doing that day, to gain a better understanding of what your true wardrobe needs are based on your lifestyle. She suggests documenting your looks during a “regular” two-week period to get an accurate assessment. I didn’t do this. When I started I was sick with a chest cold and mostly lounging at home. Although my daily activity during this sick time was different than that of a “regular day”, I realized my outfits weren’t and this honestly kind of devastated me. I learned right away that I want more out of my at-home wardrobe than yoga pants with holes in them and graphic tees. I’m really glad I was able to pinpoint this blind spot in my wardrobe.
What I learned:
Favorite outfit: Flannel button-down top layered under my grey cardigan, destructed denim, ankle booties and watch to accessorize.
Least Favorite: Anything with yoga pants / leggings
How easy was it to choose an outfit in the morning? Honestly, pretty difficult because not much in my wardrobe fits me well right now. I found myself fishing the same few pieces that actually do fit me out of the hamper multiple times.
What percentage of my closet did I wear? I honestly have no idea. Another problem I have is that my closet is currently unorganized and has also been used as a storage space since we moved in almost a year ago, creating clutter and making it difficult to actually find my clothes. From what I could keep track of, I wore less than 20% of my closet. INSANE!
Describe current style in 3 adjectives: Easy. Classic. Close (but not quite).

How my wardrobe made me feel: When my outfit was ON I felt equally empowered and expressive. But for the most part…just ok. I’d like to get my wardrobe to a place where I adore every piece in my closet and feel as though it has earned it’s place in my home and on my body.
