Did you know your yoga mat can house more than eight times more bacteria than a toilet seat?* Not exactly the image you want to spring to mind while you’re settling into your down-dog, but an extremely effective reminder that those things need to be cleaned regularly! Whether you’re borrowing one at the gym for your hot yoga class or using your own for your home practice, yoga mats can house all kinds of infection-causing bacteria and should be cleaned after each use to prevent harmful bacteria from growing.
You don’t need to go searching for the perfect spray to wipe down your mat though. Chances are, you already have the ingredients needed to make your own at home right in your bathroom cabinet. Follow this quick and easy tutorial to find out how to make your own DIY yoga mat cleaning spray below:

SUPPLIES:
- Distilled water
- 1/4 cup Witch Hazel
- Essential Oil(s) of Choice (I’m using Lemon, Tea Tree, and Sweet Orange for mine but Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, Rosemary, Thyme, and Peppermint are a few others great for cleaning and easy breathing while on the mat.)
- Spray Bottle

Start by adding the 1/4 cup of Witch Hazel to your spray bottle, then top off the rest with distilled water.

Add about 4-5 drops of each essential oil. You may want to add more or less, depending on how many different oils you are using. Attach the spray nozzle and cap, then give the mixture a healthy shake. Voilà, you now have an incredible smelling yoga mat cleaning spray!
You can even use some stickers or a cute label maker to mark your spritz bottle and store it in a cool place out of direct sunlight. To use, spray your mat after each practice and wipe it down with a clean towel.
